Acid Pro Question

Anyone here use Acid Pro? I'm hesitant to use it because I've read that it requires Microsoft's .Net thingy, which is a pretty big frickin' download, and I don't want to have to add that to my 'puter just for Acid Pro's sake. What I'm wondering is, is anyone using Acid Pro without .Net? Is it possible to do this? Or is it absolutely required to download this unnecessary 200-something MB piece of bloatware?

Don't hesitate about software because it needs .NET runtime. You'll eventually install 1.1, 1.2 and 2.0. Lots of apps are built with it now and it's not only necessary but integral. The app could never work without it.

Well, I see what you're saying, Thlayli, but respectfully disagree. There's still a wealth of software out there that has no need for .NET, and I'm just tired of MS's bloating systems with their proprietary bloatware. That's me. Others might feel differently. Everything I've got on my computer thus far works without it, and I'd just like to keep it that way, know what I mean? You're right, there's lots of progs that require it, but there are also many others that don't. Also, I've tried to find a clear definition of just what it is that .NET does, and all I get from the Microsoft site is some technically jargon-drenched, ultimately vague sales pitch that doesn't convince me of its absolute necessity. So, that's why I thought I'd ask if anyone is using Acid Pro without having installed this .NET thingy. I wanna give it a go, but I don't want .NET as well.

Edit: I just happened upon Wikipedia's definition (ALIGHT, NO MORE GROANING, YA SODS!), and.....leave it to Wikipedia to provide an understandable definition. Here it is, if anyone's interested.

It's just like the VisualBasic runtimes pre-.NET. I agree that if I have a choice between two smaller apps and one has dependencies and the other doesn't, I'll choose the well-developed one with no reliance on MS libraries.

For larger apps, I just don't see how it's a negative. Some programs take 1-2GB for installation. A couple hundred megs of shared libraries is nothing compared to all the crap those apps install, and their libraries are only used for their program.

I also don't think it really adds any overhead to your computer. I pretty much gave up on worrying about a few hundreds megs of drive space years ago, and if something isn't loaded into memory all the time, I just let it install.

Post back if you figure out how to avoid using it. I'd be interested.

Does Ableton Live need .NET? A lot of my mates use it and reckon it's better than Acid anyway...

5: Ableton? Thank god--no. That's what I use, too. And I'd agree with your mates--it's the MFin' BOOOOOOMB! I swear by Ableton.

6: A-ha! So it's like the modern-day version, or the evolution, of VisualBasic runtimes? Didn't think of it that way. You know what it is? I simply wanted to find some description of how the program works, what it does. The Wikipedia article helped me with that somewhat. But my main concern is MS's designing bigger and bigger apps that take up more space, like you said--my laptop's hard drive's only 60 GBs! Maybe I wouldn't care if I had a bigger hard drive (I've got an external HD, but it doesn't seem to cut it when you're doing realtime processes like audio recording, even though it's supposedly 7800RPM). Another concern is MS's increasing invasiveness in the user experience; they're getting a little too moralistic for my taste. Last thing I want is a little NeoCon Republican hiding on my hard drive. I'm wondering how often this .NET prog phones home, and why, under what conditions.
But hey, if I do give it a try (Acid Pro) without the .NET and it works, I'll let you know. I remember using an earlier version of Acid Pro some years back that didn't require it. Remember it being quite nice. Though like Strictly Ch

The final answer.....it's not what you got..but how you use it!.. everyone has to fine their own ZONE...not by whats popular, or who has it...I heard enough tracks with so called producers using all the same loops and breaks from times end...they pull it right out of the box and slap it on a track...

I would buy that Ableton thing for that price range..I"ve heard nothing but good about it. Sony..I mean it's alright, but come on..

If you can get a hold off ACID PRO from Sonic Foundry..it's almost totally different than Sony's, but you'd have to get it cracked since that company sold their version to sony and now you couldn't activate it,legitimately.
With Acid Pro, when you got real good you could cut stuff up faster than recycle or zero x, just by slicing and rearranging with the mouse.
And using one shot's it's fundamentally the same as MIDI,you can even quantize buy right clicking and dragging,or turning off snap to grid. You can't do that in Sony's..they suck, their Midi editor is Crap..and the beat chopper is fine for beginners.
The only good thing is that it takes VSTi's.
Sonic Foundry's version was totally superior I thought, but it was before VSTi's were common.
I'd like to meet someone with a version since mine got wiped before I knew how to back stuff up real good.

If Sonic Foundry's version had ReWire, you'd be able to use it as a slave in Ableton and get the best of both worlds. Any idea what the last version Sonic Foundry put out was? (eg., 3.0, whatever)
